UNIT 1

LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS

LIVING THINGS                             NON-LIVING THINGS

1.HUMANS                                                                     1. NATURAL NON-LIVING THINGS
2.PLANTS                                                                            (moon, starts, rocks,the sun ...)
3.ANIMALS                                                                    2.  MAN-MADE
4. MICROORGANISMS                                                      (buildings, houses, cars, toys, objetcs..)

They are born                                                                        They aren´t born
They grow                                                                             They don´t grow
They perform the THREE VITAL FUNCTION                    They don´t perform the three vital functions
(interaction, nutrition, reproduction)
They die                                                                                They don´t die
They are made of microscopic structures called CELLS      They are not made of CELLS

FROM A CELL TO AN ORGANISM

WHAT IS A CELL? a cell is the smallest living unit that makes up a living thing or an organism. All living things are made up of cells:

1.If the living things is made of only one cell is called UNICELLULAR ORGANISM

Examples: bacteria, algae..

2.If the living things is made of many  cells is called MULTICELLULAR ORGANISM

Examples: human beings, animals and plants.

HOW ARE ANIMAL AND PLANT CELLS DIFFERENT?

ANIMAL CELL

         Basic information                                            More information

DIFFERENCES: PLANT AND ANIMAL CELL

PLANT CELL                                                      ANIMAL CELL

It has got a wall                                                   It hasn´t got a wall. It has got membrane

It has got a chloroplast

Chloroplasts contain chlorophylls.

Chrolophylls make plants green and

it is needed for the photosynthesis.

Large vacuoles contain water                           Small vacuoles contain water

SIMILARITIES: PLANT AND ANIMAL CELL

PLANT AND ANIMAL CELL

They have a membrane that controls substances entering and leaving the cell.

The nucleus controls cell functions.
